The first Saturday Afternoon event of the season took place at Polehampton Junior School, which was hosting its first Saturday tournament. The tournament was well attended with an Under 9 section encouragingly matching the Open section for participants.
The Open was won by Adrian Archer-Lock (6 ⁄ 6), who was delighted to hit form on returning to his Junior School. Sam Goodwin achieved outright second with 4½ points, making an encouraging start to the new season.
The Under 9 trophy was won by Roy Zhang with an impressive performance and 6 ⁄ 6. Seven year old Chloe Rogers brought success to her new school Polehampton Junior in second with a fine 5/6. Both were amongst those attending the Berkshire Under 9 training at Ridgeway School in the morning, and had plenty of energy left for six rounds of consistent chess to boot.
Players from 18 schools took part in the event, and the new venue on the chess calendar plus a sunny afternoon were appreciated by all.
