A large entry of 24 girls allowed for a spirited competition, particularly as 22 girls were from Upton House School and knew each other very well personally and also as chess players as they are all in the same school chess club.
In the third round last years winner Chloe Rogers was paired against Octavia Mason, and an exciting game saw Octavia emerge in front. In the meantime newcomer Aisling Cunningham from St George's School, Windsor was the surprise star as she beat one player after another. Aisling has played in her school chess club for the past 2 years and this was her very first tournament so she has easily exceeded everyone's expectations with her play.
In the fifth and final round Aisling and Lily Kapoor both started on 4/4 and were paired together. A strong game saw another Aisling win to take the tournament trophy on 5/5. Lily Kapoor finished in 2nd place on 4/5 alongside Lucy Peett, Chloe Rogers and Octavia Mason. As Lily and Lucy are both graded Under 500, they played-off for the Minor trophy which is awarded to the best player graded under 500, with Lily winning a fast game.
Many thanks to Mrs Marguerite Byrne from the Upton House chess club and the other helpers for arranging such a successful afternoon.
