UKCC Qualifier at Ridgeway School
Saturday, February 16
For players who do not attend a school which runs a UK Chess Challenge tournament (all too many at Secondary level !), we run a number of open qualifiers, of which today was the first. The rules allow for the best boy and girl of each age group to qualify, along with anyone who scores more than 17 points (15 points for those over 11).
The overall winner was top-graded Felix Ynojosa with a perfect score of 21 (7 wins from 7 games, with a 3-2-1 for win-draw-lose scoring system). The large field (33 entrants) was of a very high standard with 9 players graded over 1,000 and there were 11 who qualified by reaching the minimum score mark. Nonetheless, many others (9, to be precise) also gained qualification through being the best in their group.
For those who did not qualify for the next stage (the Berkshire MegaFinal), and for any others do not have an opportunity through their school, there are two further UKCC qualifiers at St. Michael's SAE (March 29) and the Sonning Common SAE (April 5).
