After last year's Under 9 jamboree was cancelled due to lack of interest, it was great to see 9 teams from 6 schools entered this year. The competition format and use of clocks may have been new to many of the children, but they soon settled in and set their minds to outwitting their opponents over the board.
Entering the fourth and final round, Ridgeway A and Dolphin A were tied on 11 points each. They had only lost one game, to each other, and there were no games between them set for the final round. The tie-break rules were consulted, but did not prove necessary. Ridgeway lost a game to Caversham, and although a Dolphin game looked lost at one point as well, it was turned round to give another perfect 4 / 4 round, and the competition trophy.
The battle for third was set to be as fierce as for first place, with Caversham and Dolphin C equal after 3 rounds. However a poor round for Caversham (with the exception of their decisive result against Ridgeway A), saw the bronze medals go to the Dolphin C team.
I'd like to express my thanks to Ridgeway School for hosting the event in such pleasant surroundings, and for arranging weather suitable for some outdoor running around between games. The children had a good time too.
