Schools B League Final
Monday, June 22
With a new format in place for most of the primary schools' B league (4 team all-play-all single day events, rather than many league matches spread over the year), and a consequent rise in the numbers taking part, there were 6 teams invited to the end of season playoff, and they were all keen to take part.
Caversham Primary was chosen as the venue as it is relatively central in Berkshire, and they have not hosted this event before (and their B team had qualified as North Berks area winners). There was some confusion over double-booking, but in the end the school table tennis club generously moved outside (it was a splendid day with little wind, after all).
The competition itself went very smoothly with all teams arriving on time, and the players focused on their chess games throughout. Round one finished with both Earley St. Peter's and Curridge Primary leading on 4 points; Aldryngton and St. Finian's were both only one point behind, so 4 teams were in with a shout for the title going into the second, and final, round.
Only Earley St. Peter's were able to repeat the level of success from round one and an overall total of 8½ points saw them comfortably ahead of Curridge and Ridgeway B (who scored only a single win in round 1, but 4½ in round 2!) in equal second on 5½ points. Congratulations to the Earley St. Peter's team who took home the magnificent B League trophy and will next challenge the A league teams next season.
