Berkshire Junior Congress
Sunday, November 27
Mark Vandersluis writes:
12 enthusiastic youngsters entered the Under 8 section of the congress. The competition was good-natured, and given the age range the standard of chess was good, with only a couple of Scholar's Mates spotted. William Haidar from Richmond came first with an unbeaten 6/6. Second place and the Berkshire Under 8 Cup went to Matthew Wadsworth with a very impressive 5/6 - at age 5, the youngest player in the tournament. Well done Matthew! Third place was shared between Tom Vandersluis and Rowan White, both on 4 points. All four players qualify for the Under 8 section of the London Junior Chess Championships.
The editor adds... Entries were slightly down on last year, and the Berkshire contigent was not that big, but it was certainly of a high standard, with Berkshire players finishing either first or second in all sections. The under 12 section was particularly notable with Berks players filling 4 of the top 5 positions.
