This year Berkshire were hosts to Birmingham, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Sussex, Wey Valley and Wiltshire in the Southern Zone of the EPSCA Under 9 Championships held at Kennet School, Newbury. It was an early start for many of us to make sure we were ready and waiting when the visiting teams began to arrive. Then it was down to chess knowing that 7 out of the 8 teams would qualify for the Finals in Nottingham on April 4th.

The U9 team this year is a young team with many boards playing their first county matches. Everyone rose to the challenge and tried their very best. Special mention should go to Dominic Kinsler-Lubienski who scored a fantastic 3 out of 3 in his first Under 9 competitive match - very well done! Also congratulations to Thomas Bruce and Sam Usher for scoring 2 out of 3.

At the end of round 2 we were trailing in 8th place by 2½ points but in Round 3 the determination of the team really showed through! With vital wins against Buckinghamshire (our nearest rivals) by Helen Archer-Lock and Sam Usher we crept up to seventh place at the end of the round and into the Finals!
