Reading School chess team finished off a remarkably successful year by winning the English Chess Federation's National Schools Plate competition, held in Uppingham, Rutland. The final was a close match, but victories from William Foo and Ryan Wong, and draws from Roy Zhang, Matthew Wadsworth and Alfred Wong sealed our 3½ - 2½ win against Wilson's School from Sutton.
The Championship final was won by Manchester Grammar School, who beat Reading in the final last year. They secured their second successive win by beating Wellington College - the team who narrowly defeated Reading earlier in the year, which was our only loss in the competition.
Roy Zhang, Matthew Wadsworth, William Foo, Daniel Noel, Alfred Wong, Ryan Wong, Alex Vanlint and Adam Durrant made up the very talented team, and they should all be proud of their performances throughout the year. It is difficult to single out individual players for exceptional performance given how well everyone has played over the year, but special mentions go to Roy Zhang, Matthew Wadsworth and William Foo. All 3 of them have often had to play older and more highly rated players, but they have always tried their best and played with a resilience and drive that has been a joy to watch.
