What a day. The Berkshire under 13 team started with 11 players, as Ben Vandersluis was taken ill on Saturday evening. A late replacement (Ashley Trice) was found by Chris Archer-Lock, who then drove all the way to Birmingham to arrive just as we prepared to start the first round. Certainly above and beyond the call of duty.
What a first round. Berkshire scored 8 ⁄ 12 to lie in 3rd place. Then another 8 in the second round kept us in 3rd place... Consistency reigned, as it often has, and the third round saw another 7½ points. We were still in 3rd place, but only one point ahead of Surrey.
Could we do it and get some medals on the only under 13 outing of the season? Each round brings two matches from one of the opposition teams. In a strange twist, the last contained two matches between Berkshire and Surrey. Each doubly important since we were both going for 3rd place! At this point, Ashley had been unable to register a win, although he had only narrowly lost in the third round. The last round saw Ashley triumph against Surrey to score his first point for Berkshire.
The rest of the team continued to score well, but Surrey just kept winning on more boards. It was almost set up for a grandstand finish with George on board 1 winning a blitz finish with 10 seconds to spare. Sadly, from Berkshire's perspective, Surrey already had enough points to secure 3rd place by 31½ to 30½ over Berkshire. In fact the only two matches that Surrey lost in the last round were to Ashley and George from Berkshire.
A fantastic team performance, with some excellent chess and brilliant attitudes all round from the Berskhire team. Everyone should be really proud of the result.
