Streatley is a great chess tournament venue: a football pitch out front and an excellent playground out back. Oh, and some keen chess players too! 33 on this occassion, with 12 from Streatley and 10 from Caversham Primary. About half the entry had not played in a tournament before but approached the day with gusto and made the more experienced players work hard for their points.
Going in to the final round, Robert Starley was a point clear on 5 / 5, but there was a chasing pack of 5 players all on 4 points. Robert's final opponent was Sam Goodwin who proceeded to work up a good advantage, before losing it, and then gaining it back as the clock ticked down. With enough time, Sam's position would probably have been winning, which would have resulted in 4 players tied for first place. Happily for the organisers, if not for Sam, the clock had the final say as Robert claimed the game and his first trophy.
Meanwhile, the newcomers were battling it out for the minor trophy to be awarded to the top-scoring ungraded player. With an excellent 4 points, the prize went to Streatley's own George Kemp.
