Under 9 Trial
Sunday, October 01
Mark Vandersluis & Jim Wadsworth writes:
27 players (the highest number of entrants to this event for some 5 years) took part at Aldryngton School in Sunday's closely-fought team trial for the under 9's.
There was some very good chess played (with just one Scholar’s Mate spotted throughout the six rounds!) by both established stars and some very promising newcomers to the county team scheme. Amongst the latter group, Alfred Wong followed up his strong performance in the previous day’s SAE with a solid 3½ points out of 6. Ben Smith and Peter Robinson finished on the same score as Alfred, whilst Miles Deans, William Foo and Sebastian Hickman all scored 4 points.
In the final round, Tom Vandersluis overturned the form book and beat Matthew Wadsworth, and George Wilks beat Miles Deans. As a result, Tom, Matthew and George all finished 1st equal on 5 points. Distribution of the three trophies was decided by their respective “sum of opponents’ scores”. After some careful calculation by the organisers, George took home the third place trophy, Tom that for second place and Matthew the winner’s cup.
Our thanks to all those who took part and their parents, to our hosts at Aldryngton, and to everyone who helped organise the event. We look forward to an exciting and successful 2006/7 season for Berkshire’s under 9 chess team!
