SAE - Reading School Saturday, October 21
Peter Davey writes:

With four strong Reading School players and three further grade 1000+ entrants turning up for the event, it looked set to be a good competition. Although they have the age advantage, they do not play as much as the current very strong under 11 year olds. By the third round it was age that was winning. Ben Davey(14), Rachel Davey (12), Richard Smith (13), and Edmund Palka (15) were the only ones on three points. Ben won against Edmund. Rachel and Richard's game was played until both had only seconds on their clocks. In the last minute all the pieces were swapped off leaving Rachel with the only pawn left. She then run out of time, thus conceding a draw. The next round Ben played Richard. After a few minutes I saw a dejected Richard. He had tried to play as fast as Ben. Rachel won her 5th game. This left me in the embarrassing position of my own children being in first and second place. This could have been a good final match, but they had already agreed to a draw. Age did not have it all its way. In the last 2 rounds Matthew Wadsworth (6) beat Edmund (15) and drew with Richard (13).
