Entries were slightly down on last year (9 teams instead of 11), but this reportedly reflected difficulties in arranging transport for some teams, rather than an unwillingnes to enter.
The number of rounds was reduced to 4 after we found last year that we simply couldn't fit 5 rounds in if we start at 3 p.m. Once everyone got used to the pairing system, the afternoon went very smoothly and finished right on schedule. The chess was played in a very sporting manner, and losses were accepted on the whole as a worthwhile learning experience. The three "B" teams in particular were always going to find it tough going, but often made their opponents work hard for the points.
The end was not as dramatic as last year where the result came down to the final game of the day. Going into the last round, Caversham A had a clear 2 point lead over second placed Eagle House A. After only a few results Caversham could no longer be overtaken, and in the end were comfortable overall winners, scoring 17 points from a possible 20 to retain their title from last year. Eagle House finished second with 13 points, with hosts Dolphin School, and Gorse Ride (A team) joint third on 12. The full list of teams with positions and scores are available, and the full set of match details has now also been loaded into the database. (The games have been used for grading, but the grades are not currently displayed - I will endeavour to fix this as soon as I can).
