SAE - St. Nicholas, Hurst
Saturday, January 20
With strong turnouts from not only our host school but also St. Mary's, Ascot, a big field of 38 contested the SAE at St. Nicholas, Hurst. With quite a few participants being relatively new to chess tournaments, there were plenty of opportunities for on-the-fly coaching; even so whilst there were quite a few "accidental" stalemates, just one Scholar's Mate was spotted throughout the afternoon. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, both in the playing hall and outside where an energetic football match took advantage of the good weather.
Both the overall event and the under 500 prize were, as ever, closely-fought. Ben Smith took the under 500 honours to win his first Berkshire trophy, finishing on an excellent 4 out of 6, just half a point ahead of three other contenders. He claimed some notable, higher-graded scalps along the way.
The main prize was only decided in the very last game to finish, Daniel Noel beating Matthew Wadsworth in an even and exciting game watched by what had become quite a crowd of spectators. It was settled when Matthew, who had earlier in the game turned down a couple of draw offers, ran out of time. Zoe Goodwin finished in a clear second place on 5 out of 6, losing only to Daniel in round 4. Four players ended up 3rd equal on 4.5, included Reece Rogers who successfully remained undefeated throughout the afternoon.
