SAE - Streatley Primary
Saturday, February 03
A beautiful, mild winter's day attracted a large entry of 38 young, keen chess players - 18 from the hosts Streatley (an excellent number for a relatively small school) and 11 from nearby Caversham. Unfortunately, the children were confined to quarters in between games due to a muddy football pitch out front, and playground line-painting out back. Still, maybe it encouraged a slower approach to the games of chess from some of the players.
Run as a single section, the top players were seeded for a show-down in rounds 5 and 6. Sure enough, in round 5, last year's winner, Robert Starley was up against Sam Goodwin, for the privilege of (probably) meeting top seed Rachel Davey in the final round. Robert maintained his hopes of another trophy by winning against Sam, but was not able to keep the momentum going, losing to Rachel in round 6.
So, Rachel Davey added to her trophy collection, while Robert and Sam shared second place with Harvey Jensen. The minor trophy was awarded to the best Under grade 500 player, and went to Dominic Haederle who had started the day with a modest grade of 338, but scored an excellent 4 / 6.
